What Is Meals on Wheels?

Meals on Wheels is a household name as this important service provides nutritionally balanced meals to the aged, people with a disability and their carers to help maintain their independence.

The North Shoalhaven Meals Cooperative is a community based organisation that specialises in a Meals on Wheels service to people who have difficulty preparing and cooking meals for themselves.

The 7 meals on wheels services in the Cooperative are located in the local communities of Berry, Shoalhaven Heads, Nowra, Currarong, Culburra Beach, Huskisson and St Georges Basin.

Meals can be provided for up to seven days a week and consist of a main meal and dessert.

Every effort is made to keep the meals affordable. Meal packages (meal + dessert) cost between $5.00 & $7.50, depending on which service provides the meal. The price of the meal covers the cost of producing the meal. Government funding covers administration costs e.g. staffing, petrol etc.

Meals provided follow guidelines provided by the NSW Meals on Wheels Association to ensure nutritional balance and suitability. Special diets, including diabetic, gluten free, diary free and vegetarian are catered for.

Our Currarong, Huskisson Vincentia, Jervis Bay and Shoalhaven Heads services prepare meals in their local kitchens. Food Safety standards as required by the NSW Food Authority are adhered to and audits are completed annually.

Our Nowra Bomaderry Service receives frozen meals from Master Catering and delivers them hot or frozen. This service is also audited annually by the NSW Food Authority.

Culburra Beach receives frozen meals from Master Catering and delivers them frozen to clients. Food Safety standards are followed.

Berry delivers hot meals purchased from the Berry Masonic Village. Food Safety standards are followed.

The Cooperative is a member of the New South Wales Meals on Wheels Association — www.nswmealsonwheels.org.au
